A simple energy efficiency tip: draw the curtains!

If your home has ground floor windows facing on to public areas the chances are you draw your curtains pretty promptly when darkness falls. But with more and more of us living in flats and apartments with expansive views and no overlooking neighbours for total privacy (or at least the illusion of it!) many people never shut their curtains at all.

But did you know that the majority of the average home’s heat energy is lost through it’s windows? Obvious when you think about it…glass keeps out rain and wind but it’s hardly the best insulator in the world, so it’s not surprise half your home’s heat is flying out of these barely covered holes in the wall.

Amazingly enough you can dramatically improve the energy efficiency of your central heating system with one simple tip: close the curtains! Far from just adding another layer of flimsy covering the curtains will create a buffer zone between themselves and the glass, sealing in warm air.

If you can invest in thick curtains all the better…ideally you won’t be able to see much if they’re drawn in full sunlight! The heavier the curtain the more insulation, and the more efficient you’ll be using your central heating system.
